Where can I buy gooey butter cake in St. Louis?
Butter cake in St. Louis is like gumbo in New Orleans: everybody has a recipe and it’s made in thousands of different ways. The cake is served in restaurants, sold in grocery stores, and baked from family recipes in homes across the region. It is considered the "official unofficial" dessert of STL.
Where did Ooey Gooey originate?
The cake originated in St. Louis in the 1930s. A German baker accidentally mismeasured his ingredients while attempting to make his regular cake batter. Instead of throwing the batter out he baked it, resulting in a delectable and memorable classic. Lo and behold... butter cake was born!
